Nigel paints his cityscapes outdoors using oils on board. By painting in front of a scene, in all weathers, he is able to capture the atmosphere and a moment in time in a way that is impossible when working from photographs or sketches in a studio. His trademark is the thick paint which is left hanging off the board like a torn edge.
He says "I want my paintings to have the spontaneity and energy of a sketch. Textures, impasto oils, oozing colour and movement cover my Bristol cityscapes".
Currently Nigel is working on a project painting images of tango dancers which will go on exhibition when he has built up a collection. He has not given up cityscapes, just trying something new.
Nigel studied at Harrow and Norwich Schools of Art in the 1970's and his work is held in collections in the UK, France, Switzerland and elsewhere.
